Die strike on labels

Die strike is how far the blade goes. Too far and it cuts the liner. Too light and the label stays in the matrix. The right strike just kisses through the face and the adhesive.

Checks

  1. Hold the liner up to the light. A dark cut line means you are into the liner. No line, and a label that will not pop out, means you are short.
  2. A strike that is good in the middle and deep at one end is pressure or a worn bearer, not the whole die.
  3. Film faces and laminate need a different strike from paper faces. Set it on the real construction.
  4. A liner that breaks on the applicator was usually nicked on press. Check the waste liner, not only the finished roll.
