Scores that crack or wander
A score should open the fiber so the fold follows it. Too sharp and it cracks. Too light and the fold wanders. Film and coating on the board change the depth you need.
Checks
- Score a blank of the real board, with the coating or film on it if the job has one.
- Look at the inside of the fold. A split fiber is too deep or too dry. A fold that ignores the score is too light.
- Run the score with the grain when the design allows it. Against the grain needs a wider channel.
- Do not judge a score on a warm, freshly printed sheet. Let the ink and the coating set.
