Poor ink holdout
Poor holdout means the sheet drank the ink instead of keeping it on the surface. The print looks mottled, weak, or dull, especially on uncoated or uneven stock.
Checks
- Compare a coated and an uncoated sheet with the same ink. If only the open sheet looks dull, the stock is absorbing the vehicle.
- Mottle that follows the formation of the paper is holdout, not a roller defect.
- A light film of coating or a different ink body can keep color on the surface. Test before you raise the coat weight.
- Do not judge holdout on a wet sheet. Let it dry, then look at the solids.
